Alabama

The Alabama Nursery and Landscape Association has presented Leah Quarles of Landscape Workshop of Birmingham, Ala., with its prestigious Horizon Award. Quarles is the first woman to receive the award, which recognizes a young industry leader who has made significant contributions to the nursery and landscape industry.

Quarles is floriculture manager for Landscape Workshop. Landscape Workshop is one of Alabama’s largest commercial landscape services companies, providing landscape design, installation and maintenance services.

LBYD Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., a consulting civil and structural engineering firm, recently announced the promotions of Brian Hatcher, Casey Brown and Nathan Hefner  to project engineer, and Prabhu Sundaram to assistant project manager.

Hatcher is a graduate of The University of Alabama with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. Currently, he is involved with the civil design of the new Trussville High School in Trussville, Ala., and Savannah Cove Townhomes in Morris, Ala., and was recently involved with the civil design for the Samford University Tennis Facility in Birmingham.

Brown is a graduate of The University of Alabama at Birmingham with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Currently, he is involved with the structural design of the Shoppes at River Crossing in Macon, Ga., and The Summit at Front Range Village in Fort Collins, Colo. 

Hefner is a graduate of The University of Alabama with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. He was recently involved with the structural design of St. Vincent’s South Tower in Birmingham and is currently involved with Mount Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala., Old San Jose Condominium in Jacksonville, Fla., and various banks around the Southeast. 

Sundaram received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The University of Madras, and received his master’s degree in civil engineering from The University of Alabama. Currently, he is involved with the structural design of the Regal Cinemas in South Portland, Maine, The Holzer Clinic in Athens, Ohio, and the Carle Rehabilitation Institute in Champaign, Ill.

KPS Group Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., recently announced the promotion of Susan K. Lineberry to vice president and project manager. Lineberry has also become a shareholder in the architectural firm.

She has been with KPS Group for more than 10 years, beginning her career with the firm as an interior designer and architectural intern. Lineberry has worked for a variety of clients, including Canterbury United Methodist Church, Temple Emanu-El, McWane Science Center, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Decatur, Ala. She holds a bachelor’s degree in human environmental sciences from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Lineberry also recently became a certified LEED accredited professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating System promotes policies to improve environmental impact and energy conservation of commercial buildings using advanced design principles, standards and materials. 

Gallet & Associates Inc. recently announced the following appointments in the South Central region: Gigi Copeland, project scientist, Birmingham, Ala.; Kevin Doriety, staff scientist, Birmingham; Carlos King, mid level CMT technician, Birmingham; Jennifer Vilbig, CMT/ Geotech Intern, Atlanta, Ga.; Meghan Alesce, environmental intern, Birmingham; Kyle Haggard, environmental intern, Birmingham; Timothy Bunger, CMT intern , Jackson, Miss.; and Marcus Rue, CMT/Geotech intern, Jackson.

Gallet provides environmental consulting, geotechnical engineering and field quality control services.

Dunn Building Co. LLC of Birmingham, Ala., recently announced the promotion of Stephanie Rhodes to safety director and human resources manager. Rhodes has served as the Safety and Human Resource administrator for Dunn since 2000. She received a bachelor’s degree in history at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and is currently pursuing her degree in human resource management and studying to obtain her Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.

Dunn also announced the hiring of Eric Campbell as its newest project manager/estimator. Campbell recently relocated to Birmingham from New York, where he was a principal/owner and senior vice president of a family-owned structural/commercial painting and general construction company.  He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism & communications at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Arkansas

CDI Contractors LLC of LIttle Rock, Ark., one of Arkansas’ largest general contracting firms, recently announced the promotion of William Clark as chairman and chief executive officer of the company.

“It’s an honor to lead such a great team.  It’s very humbling, and I look forward to building on the legacy that CDI has built over the last 20 years. With the team we have in place, I have no doubt that CDI will continue to accomplish great things,” says William Clark.

Clark has more than 20 years of industry experience. Since joining CDI in 1994, he has served the company in a number of roles, starting in the field and working his way up to management. In the past decade, he has successfully managed several major construction projects for CDI, including Alltel Building V, the Victory Building and Heifer International. Recently, he has been instrumental in helping make the day-to-day business decisions for the company.  Clark will become only the second CEO in the company’s history.

CDI is one of the largest Arkansas-based general contractors with annual revenues in excess of $400 million. Operating throughout the country, CDI is consistently ranked in the top 400 contractors in the United States by Engineering News-Record.  They have two offices in Arkansas, one in Little Rock and one in Johnson. CDI employs approximately 800 people nationwide.

W. Todd Barnett has joined J. E. Dunn South Central as general counsel and senior vice president. Barnett brings more than 15 years of legal experience in complex construction contracting, claims and litigation to his new position. Prior to joining JE Dunn South Central, he was a partner with the Houston, Texas, law firms of Jackson Walker LLP; Chamberlain, Hrdlicka; and White, Williams and Martin.

Barnett has a bachelor’s degree in finance from Louisiana State University and a law degree from The University of Arkansas. He is licensed to practice law in both Texas and Arkansas and is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the Arkansas Bar Association and the Houston Bar Association.

JE Dunn South Central is a locally managed construction manager/general contractor serving the South Central region of the United States. 

Christopher Ryan East, Cromwell Architects Engineers of Little Rock, Ark., has passed the Architectural Registration Exam.

East received his bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Arkansas in 2003, became a LEEDTM accredited professional in 2004 and completed his Architectural Registration Exams in 2007.

East is one of the founding members of the Emerging Green Builders (EGB) group in Arkansas and has been involved with the National EGB since Greenbuild 2005. He also holds the EGB chair on the U.S. Green Building Council Arkansas State Board.

Louisiana

Clement Industries of Minden, La., a manufacturer of end dump construction trailers, has appointed Ronald E. Dietz as vice president marketing/aluminum.

“We are proud to announce that a top executive of one of our most successful distributors has chosen to associate himself with Clement and will lead our marketing efforts for aluminum trailers,” says Greg Hicks, chief operating officer of Clement.

Dietz is a native of Colorado and has spent 27 years in all phases of the manufacturing and marketing of trailers. His trailer career began at Timpte Trailers of Denver, Colo., as a sales coordinator. He eventually formed his own trailer sales company, which later merged with Transwest Trailer Sales of Colorado.

Dietz served as vice president and general manager of Transwest for 11 years, selling steel and aluminum trailers. During that period Transwest was a perennial sales leader of Clement dump trailers.

Tennessee

The Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) has presented its Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award to John Jernigan, senior consultant for SSR Ellers, the Memphis office of Smith Seckman Reid Inc. (SSR), an engineering design and facility consulting firm.

The state organization gives the award to a professional who demonstrates outstanding service and support to the society and to their profession. It is the highest honor given by the TSPE. It is the second straight year Jernigan has been recognized by TSPE. In 2006 he was named the Outstanding Engineer of the Year for the organization’s Memphis Chapter.

Jernigan has been with SSR Ellers since 1965 and helped start the office’s transportation division. He is a civil/structural engineer and licensed surveyor, providing management and design services for many local and national civil/transportation projects in both the public and private sectors.

Jernigan earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. He received his master’s degree in civil/transportation engineering and a doctorate in seismic risk evaluation from the University of Memphis.  He is a registered professional engineer in 16 states and land surveyor in four states.

Regional

Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Inc. of Houston, Texas, recently announced that Peter J. Holland has joined the company as executive vice president. Holland will assist in forging the future strategic direction of S&P, developing new markets and overseeing day-to-day operations.

Holland is a graduate of the U. S. Air Force Academy and has more than 24 years of diverse experience in the engineering and construction business.
