Alabama
David Laney, project manager at Brice Building Co. of Birmingham,
was installed as a member of Associated Builders and Contractors
of Alabama's Board of Directors at its annual installation
of officers banquet.
The ABC Board of Directors is voted on by its membership.
The selection criteria consist of members that exemplify leadership
qualities within their company and their commitment to ABC
and the construction industry.
Laney has been involved with ABC's Project Management Committee,
Future Leaders In Construction (FLIC) and several task forces
that have dealt with legislative issues and general contractor/subcontractor
relationships.
Robert Layne Odom has been promoted at Superior Mechanical
Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., to project manager. His responsibilities
include the coordination and administration of Superior's
plumbing contract at St. Vincent's Hospital's South Tower
and UAB's Spark Building renovation.
Odom has been associated with Superior for 23 years and most
recently served as foreman on the firm's most challenging
construction projects such as Medical Center East's patient
tower, HealthSouth Conference Center and Jefferson County
Courthouse's additions and renovations.
He is a master plumber, journeyman gas fitter and certified
as a medical gas installer.
"Layne will add significant depth to Superior's growing
leadership staff," said President Richard H. Drennen.
Gallet & Associates Inc. of Birmingham recently announced
that T. W. Oden, Howard Hornsby, Josh Green and Eric Dikes
have received Level One Concrete Certification from the Alabama
Department of Transportation.
They are all engineering technicians for the company's Construction
Materials Testing Department.
Michael Parks has been promoted to senior project manager
at Hoar Construction of Birmingham and will relocate to the
company's Florida Division office in Orlando, Fla.
Parks will work with the Florida office and concentrate on
growing the company's healthcare work in the Florida market.
Hoar Construction has offices in Orlando, Houston, Nashville
and Birmingham.
The late Houston A. Brice Sr., founder of Brice Building
Co., the late R. Hugh Daniel, co-founder of Daniel Construction,
and the late John M. Harbert III, founder of Harbert Construction
Co., were inducted into the Alabama Construction Hall of Fame
at a ceremony at The Club in Birmingham on Jan. 13.
The Alabama AGC established the Alabama Construction Hall
of Fame to honor and recognize outstanding individuals in
the construction industry. These individuals are held in esteem
by their peers and have demonstrated their professionalism
through active support of the industry through their civic
and community involvement.
Brice founded Brice Building Co. in 1931. The company continued
to grow and after the war it experienced a remarkable surge
in annual volume, from $2 million to $10 million. The company
opened offices around the Southeast and grew into one of the
largest construction firms in the country.
Daniel, a native of Anderson, S.C., adopted Birmingham as
his home, then built and led Daniel Construction Co. to become
one of the largest publicly traded construction companies
in the world, with offices on four continents. In 1964, he
also helped found Central Bank and Trust, now Compass Bank,
and served as chairman of the board until his retirement in
1979.
Harbert was a native of Greenville, Miss., but it was in
Birmingham that he spent most of his life and created a company
that brought him fame. He was five hours short of finishing
an engineering degree at Auburn University when he was called
to duty in World War II. After service with the U.S. Army
in the Pacific, he returned to complete his degree.
His business grew into an international giant, building projects
in Europe, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and South America. In the Birmingham
area, Harbert built the SouthTrust Tower, Amsouth/Harbert
Plaza and the Galleria. The Harbert Corp.'s tradition continues
today as B.L. Harbert International LLC.
M. J. Harris Inc. of Birmingham recently completed the Northern
Idaho Advanced Care Hospital in Post Falls, Idaho. The new
40-bed, 43,000-sq.-ft., long-term acute care hospital is owned
by Ernest Health Inc. The hospital features a 6,000-sq.-ft.
therapy gym, outdoor therapy courtyard, eight intensive care
beds and a therapy pool.
The project started in May 2005 and has recently begun accepting
patients on a full-time basis. Architecture firm Dekker/Perich/Sabatini
Ltd. of Albuquerque, N.M., performed the design of the project.
M. J. Harris is a construction services company licensed
to work in all 50 states.
Louisiana
United Scaffolding Inc. of Baton Rouge recently announced
the appointment of Glen Tyler to branch manager of its Baton
Rouge office. He has been in the scaffolding industry since
1969. Prior to joining USI, he was employed by Aluma Systems.
Tyler will manage business operations and development within
the greater Baton Rouge area, most of Louisiana and Mississippi.
He will coordinate these efforts with the USI/XServ management
team.
The Newtron Group Inc., a Baton Rouge-based electrical and
instrumentation services company, recently announced two promotions.
John Schempf, currently general manager of the Baton Rouge
office of Triad Electric & Controls, has been promoted
to general manager of the national operations of The Newtron
Group Inc., the parent company of Triad.
Glen Redd, an industry executive with more than 40 years
experience in the E & I industry, will now assume the
role of general manager of Triad's efforts in the Baton Rouge
and New Orleans industrial markets.
"We are pleased to welcome Glen to Triad and John to
the national operations. These additions will position us
to increase our market share and leadership positions in both
the local and national industrial construction markets,"
said Bruce Beard, president of The Newtron Group.
The Newtron Group is one of the largest privately owned industrial
E & I contractors in the nation.
Newpark Resources Inc. of Metairie recently announced that
Gary Warren has joined its board of directors. Warren has
spent the past 33 years in various management and executive
positions in the oilfield services industry and recently retired
from Weatherford International Ltd., where he served as senior
vice president and president of the Drilling and Well Services
Division for the past six years.
Newpark Resources is a provider of drilling fluids, environmental
waste treatment solutions and temporary work sites and access
roads for oilfield and other commercial markets.
Tennessee
T.W. Frierson Contractor Inc. of Nashville recently added
two experienced managers to its team, enabling the company
to continue to meet the demands brought on by an expanding
client base.
Barry "Duane" West, most recently with D.F. Chase
Construction Inc., has been added to Frierson's staff as a
senior project manager and will manage commercial building
projects for the company. West will focus primarily on scheduling,
contract administration and management, purchasing and coordination
with design professionals predominantly in the Southeast.
A graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, West is
originally from Manchester, Tenn. He resides in Murfreesboro.
Douglas Reader has joined Frierson as a senior estimator.
Reader, a pre-construction manager for 16 years with BaCar
Constructors, is also an instructor for project management
classes offered by the Associated Builders and Contractor's
Middle Tennessee Chapter.
Reader received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering
from West Virginia University.
"Over the last several years, Frierson has seen a significant
growth in local and regional business," said Del Hickman,
co-owner of the general contractor. "These additions
fall within our business plan and more importantly fall in
line with our corporate culture."
Linkous Construction Co. Inc. of Memphis recently announced
the addition of Brandon Speakman as project manager. Brandon
has 10 years of commercial construction experience and will
be working out of the company's main headquarters in Memphis,
Tenn.
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association recently announced
that Jenna Burnworth has joined the association staff as government
relations coordinator. Burnworth is a recent graduate of Middle
Tennessee State University's Concrete Industry Management
Program.
The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native graduated cum laude in December
with a bachelor's degree in concrete industry management and
a minor in business administration. Burnworth was also a student
member of the American Concrete Institute and served as an
intern at NRMCA in 2003.
She joins NRMCA's government affairs directors Kevin Voelte
and Robert Sullivan in the department.
"We're very pleased to have Jenna with us," said
NRMCA President Robert Garbini. "The quality of the MTSU
graduates who've been placed throughout the ready mixed industry
has been outstanding and her academic background and stellar
credentials will enable her to be an asset to our association
and the industry."
NRMCA, based in Silver Spring, Md., represents the producers
of ready mixed concrete and the companies that provide materials,
equipment and support to the industry.
J.E. Crain & Son Inc. of Nashville recently announced
that Mike Gribble has been promoted to senior project manager
and Kenny Mixon has been promoted to project superintendent.
