$150 million in new construction, renovations
The Nashville Division
of healthcare construction firm Robins & Morton is completing more than $150

million Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn., includes a new 149,000-sq.-ft.
patient tower addition, in addition to 29,000 sq. ft. in renovations. Completion
is scheduled for 2006. The four-story Fisher Titus Medical Center in Norwalk,
Ohio, with a 101,000-sq.-ft. patient tower, is valued at $24 million. Another
$10 million in renovation work is in progress for that facility. Two New Mexico
jobs - Artesia General Hospital in Artesia and Gerald Champion Regional Medical
Center in Alamogordo - are underway. Those projects represent more than
75,000 sq. ft. of new construction and renovations, with a value of $27 million. Monroe
Hospital in Bloomington, Ind., broke ground in May on a new $22 million hospital
with 90,000 sq. ft. Meanwhile, a $12 million emergency room renovation and Women's
Center addition is under way at Logan Regional Medical Center in West Virginia.
Houston's Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center is getting $8 million in additions
and renovations. Finally, in Maine, construction is under way for Calais
Regional Hospital, a 65,000-sq.-ft. replacement hospital valued at $16 million. Robins
& Morton has completed more than 650 healthcare facilities across the country
in its 59-year history. Two North Nashville universities
are neck-deep in construction projects totaling almost $40 million Meharry
Medical College recently contracted Powell Construction Co. of Nashville to begin
work on the $9 million Center for Women's Health Research. The facility will address
health issues affecting black women. Initial construction should cost about
$7.2 million. At nearby Tennessee State University, the performing arts
center and the downtown campus are currently being renovated. Construction includes
an $8.5 million research center, to be built by Orion Building Corp. of Nashville,
and a $1.7 million agricultural information technology center. The Meharry
project will take up 10,000 sq. ft. in the George Hubbard Hospital building on
D.B. Todd Boulevard. The center will include an endocrinology lab for hormonal
studies, core centers for behavioral science and radiology, an exercise facility,
seminar rooms and general laboratories. The technological demands of the
center and the age of the circa-1910 building have created numerous construction
challenges. Roadtec begins series of asphalt workshops Roadtec
