Gresham, Smith and Partners finishes master plans for two Alabama projects

By Dan Carsen

The Birmingham, Ala., branch of Gresham, Smith and Partners has completed master plans for two Alabama revitalization projects, the Selma Riverfront Park and the City of Montevallo Downtown Redevelopment.

“Both of these projects focus on improving the communities … by providing amenities to enhance the quality of life for citizens,” says GS&P designer Chuck Kelly. “The master plans provide roadmaps for development as elements of the designs are approved and funds become available.”

The Montevallo project is meant to unify the look and feel of 13 blocks of the city's downtown between the University of Montevallo and Orr Park, and to connect various commercial and civic destinations in the area. Proposed improvements include expanding and enhancing walkways, reconfiguring parking space and traffic flow, and creating a pedestrian corridor between the campus and the park.

The Selma project aims to improve a depressed section of downtown by developing 12 acres along the Alabama River. The plan includes an amphitheater, a boat dock, a playground, an interactive water fountain, a historically-themed carousel, and roughly 2,300 ft of multi-use riverfront trail. The park will be visible from the historic Edmund Pettis Bridge.

GS&P provided site analysis, design, and master planning services on both projects.
