Nashville has picked the hotel develop-design-build team of Phelps Portman Nashville LLC to develop and build a 1,000-room hotel, estimated to cost $300 million, next to the planned downtown convention center.
Phelps Portman, which has developed 10 hotels with 1,000 rooms or more, is made up of Phelps Development, a subsidiary of Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Greeley, Colo.; and Portman, an arm of international developer Portman Holdings of Atlanta. John Portman & Associates will be architect of record.
“This team was selected because they have extensive experience, an exciting vision and a commitment to Nashville,” Phil Ryan, executive director of Nashville’s Metro Housing and Development Agency, said in a statement.
Phelps Portman will handle all aspects of design and construction for the hotel, which must open by March 2013 to meet already-signed convention commitments.
The partnership is also bringing in some Nashville talent. R.C. Mathews Contractor and Morgan & Morgan Construction will work on the building side and Earl Swensson Associates, architect, on the design side.
The hotel, south of the Country Music Hall of Fame, will be more than 40 stories tall and have 100,000 sq ft of meeting space, ballrooms, restaurants and retail space.
The adjacent $595 million convention center will cover 1.2 million sq ft. Turner Universal is managing the project with Remnant Construction Management Group of Nashville.
