Vanderbilt University, faced with a high demand for parking at its crowded medical complex, took it underground.
R.C. Mathews Contractor has started pouring the 11-level parking garage that will fill the 90-ft hole blasted out of rock to accommodate the $30 million project. Eight of the 11 levels will be below ground in the poured-in-place and post-tensioned concrete building, says Walker Mathews, president.
The project footprint is 130 ft by 400 ft. With spaces for 1,800 vehicles, the garage will replace a 182-space surface lot. The above-ground exterior will be concrete and brick.
Gresham Smith & Partners of Nashville is the architect. Completion is scheduled for September 2010.
The garage is about two blocks from Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where a planned $200 million expansion is on hold because of the economy.
