MAY Construction Co. announces $100 million steel pipe plant

Little Rock, Ark., is now the newest home for Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren Ltd., the flagship company of the $1 billion Welspun Group, manufacturer of steel pipe most commonly used for gas, oil, crude or water transportation.

One of India’s fastest growing companies, Welspun currently has a presence in 50 countries and is now expanding its presence to the United States.

MAY Construction Co. has been named general contractor for the Welspun Group’s latest $100 million venture to be constructed on a 740-acre site located in the Little Rock Port.

WGSRL’s operation will consist of two pre-engineered steel factories spread across 455,000 sq ft. The spiral mill factory will produce the steel pipes and the other will apply an internal and external coating to the finished product.  It is estimated that the Little Rock facility will annually produce 300,000 net tons of tubular steel pipe.

The two new facilities will produce pipes from 1 in thick and will range from 24 to 64 in diameter. The spiral plant mill will be equipped with an elaborate, on-site rail system and heavy industrial bridge cranes to transport the product. The plant will have several specific equipment foundations with the largest measuring 10 ft deep.
