| National AIA honor award given
to Arkansas design center
The American Institute of Architects (AIA)
recently announced the 2005 recipients of the AIA Honor Awards, the profession's
highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior
architecture, and urban design. In the south central region, an honor award
for outstanding regional and urban design will be presented to the University
of Arkansas Community Design Center for its design of the "Riparian Meadows,
Mounds & Rooms" at Urban Greenway in Warren, Ark. The plan proposes
a public greenway along a creek in the City of Warren that combines innovations
in stream design with community development. Stream restoration will provide corrective
measures to address existing infrastructural problems. Corrective measures
are supplemented with a vegetated riparian edge, return of stream sinuosity, and
strategic bank armoring to prevent excessive erosion and sediment transport. Selected
from more than 630 total submissions, 34 other recipients will be honored in May
at the AIA 2005 National Convention and Design Expo in Las Vegas. Rushing
