Brasfield & Gorrie helps building achieve state’s first LEED-gold certification

Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Birmingham, Ala., played an integral role in creating Alabama’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-Gold Certified building.

The M. Miller Gorrie Building Science Center, designed by CHM Architects, was named after Miller Gorrie, founder of Brasfield & Gorrie. The facility earned 39 credits to become a LEED-Gold Certified building.

It is also the state’s highest-ranked LEED-Certified building, according to the U. S. Green Building Council web site.

The 35,555-sq-ft-steel frame building finished construction approximately two years ago and had always wanted to earn LEED Certification.

To earn the Gold level of certification, the facility was thoroughly examined and graded on several environmentally friendly components. Water and energy efficiency, the amount of recycled materials on the jobsite and improving stormwater quality and quantity are just a few factors that are determined by licensed LEED professionals.

Not only is this state’s first LEED-Gold building, but it marks another first for Auburn University as it’s the first LEED-Certified facility on its campus.
