B.L. Harbert International LLC recently won the contract for the University of Alabama’s Science & Engineering Complex.

The three-story, 235,000-sq-ft facility, located on the University of Alabama’s campus in Tuscaloosa, Ala., has a construction schedule of 19 months and a completion date of July 2009.

The $64 million free-standing building, consisting of laboratories and classrooms, will expand the existing Shelby Hall’s Science and Engineering facility. The laboratory facilities include extensive gas systems, complex mechanical systems and fume exhaust hoods.

The BLHI team includes Dwight Sammons, superintendent; Lee Moffett, senior project manager; and Marty Martin, project manager. Design consultants for the project are Davis Architects.

Hallman Hall mixed-use development breaks ground

Arlington Properties recently broke ground on the $37 million first phase of their Hallman Hill mixed-use development in suburban Birmingham, Ala.

According to Bill Dobbins, vice president development for Arlington, “This unique development is designed in keeping with the historic character of Homewood, Ala. Hallman Hill brings to Homewood quality home ownership choices within walking distance of the main business district, the library, churches and the municipal complex.”

“There are contracts on about 60 percent of the 72 condominium homes in phase one,” says Margi Ingram of Ingram New Homes.

The first phase includes 9,000 sq ft of retail with another 6,000 sq ft planned for the second phase. Retail Specialists Inc. is leasing the retail portion of the project.

Completion of the first phase is expected in the spring 2009.

The Garrison Barrett Group’s architectural plan creates a streetscape with the six Hallman Hill buildings uniquely designed in the historic styles of Homewood.

The 5.4-acre project is located on the site of the former Homewood Gardens. Hallman Hill is on Oxmoor Road, one block west of the Highway 31 intersection. Nineteenth Street intersects the project.

Other project team members include Arlington Construction Services LLC, general contractor; LBYD Inc., civil engineer; and Dix-Lathrop & Associates, landscape architect.
