| Brasfield & Gorrie completes construction of Simon-Williamson Clinic
Brasfield & Gorrie of Birmingham, Ala., has completed construction of the new $16 million Simon-Williamson Clinic at Princeton Baptist Hospital in Birmingham.
The new 100,000 sq ft medical office building offers internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, urology, neurology, oncology, gastroenterology, ENT/audiology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, podiatry, diagnostic laboratory and computerized digital imaging including ultrasound, digital mammography, echocardiography, vascular ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CT and MRI.
Simon-Williamson Clinic is one of the largest independent multi-specialty physician groups in Alabama. The facility was a design-build project of Inkana Development, Brasfield & Gorrie, Gresham Smith & Partners as architect, landscape architect and civil engineer, LBYD as structural engineer, Whitaker and Rawson as mechanical engineer and Sajjadieh Engineering Group as the electrical engineer.
Coating Systems honored by PDCA
Coating Systems LLC of Jemison, Ala., was named a first place winner of The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America’s 2007 Picture It Painted Professionally (PIPP) Awards, which were revealed in February at PACE, the Paint and Coatings Expo in Dallas, Texas.
The PIPP awards are PDCA’s way of paying tribute to the work of its 2,500 members.
Coating Systems was selected as the winner in the Commercial Interior Category.
“We are honored to be recognized for our craftsmanship and dedication,” said Managing Member Mark Underwood. “We work very hard to do the best job possible and it’s rewarding to be acknowledged for our efforts, particularly by our peers in the industry.”
Criteria used for selecting the industry’s top jobs are skill, execution and demanding scheduling; use of color as a primary design element; use of special techniques and treatments; and overall creativity.
PDCA President Carol Adkins said, “This year’s recipients of the PIPP Awards illustrate the top craftsmen in our industry. They go beyond the description of painter to be classified as the top talented professionals of our industry, producing only high-quality craftsmanship work.
Contractor finishes Orange Beach condo
Bell and Associates Construction of Brentwood, Tenn., recently completed the Opal, located at Orange Beach, Ala.
The Opal was featured on the Great Escape’s “Luxury Living” segment. The show is scheduled to air on the Women’s Entertainment Network.

Opal Condominiums is a 14-story beach-front residential development, and includes 13 luxury residences. Each of the residences has five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms.
Superior Mechanical lands Social Security project
Superior Mechanical Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., has been awarded the plumbing contract for the 587,000-sq-ft Social Security Center for OPUS South.
The building is the largest addition to Birmingham’s skyline since 2004 and represents a $150 million investment by Minneapolis-based OPUS.
Superior’s responsibilities include the underground utilities, sanitary waste and vent service, domestic water service and storm sewer service. Company officials estimate the value of the work at just under $3 million.
Headquartered in Birmingham, Superior Mechanical is a 24-year-old commercial plumbing contractor with an emphasis on large, complicated construction projects requiring scale and expertise.
ARBA inducts six into Hall of Fame
The Alabama Road Builders Hall of Fame, which was created by the Alabama Road Builders Association, inducted six members into its fifth Hall of Fame class in April.
Members of the 2007 class include William A. Hughes Sr.; William E. Page; Roger Bass; Samuel Barrow Murphree Sr.; Ralph E. Compagno; and S. A. Graham.
The Hall of Fame was created to honor, preserve and perpetuate the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of individuals and companies that have brought significant recognition to Alabama in the field of transportation construction.
“The transportation construction industry is delighted about the continued support of the Alabama Road Builders Hall of Fame,” said Hall of Fame Board Chairman M. B. McCartney of Gadsden, Ala.’s McCartney Construction. “Individually and collectively, this industry makes significant contributions to the advancement of engineering and technology, leading to an enhanced economic, cultural and political future for the state and nation.
“Those honored will serve as symbols inspiring others to pursue rewarding and challenging careers in all transportation construction fields.”
The ceremony, held at The Montgomery Country Club, was attended by more than 200 of the industry’s pioneers and their families, and represented generations of Alabama’s transportation construction history.
The Alabama Road Builders Hall of Fame is governed by a 10-member board of directors made up of past Alabama Road Builders Association presidents from each decade that ARBA has existed. ARBA was incorporated in 1947.
