Birmingham firm takes top honors in regional contest

Birmingham design firm Giattina Fisher Aycock Architects earned four awards from the American Institute of Architects Gulf States Region's annual design contest.

The awards were presented during a June reception and presentation in Los Angeles. The projects included The Junior League of Birmingham Hugh Kaul Children's Zoo, the Alabama Veteran's Memorial, the Children's Center Parking Deck at the Children's Hospital of Alabama and Homewood Middle School.

"We focus on excellence in design on every project that comes through our doors," said GFA principal Chris Giattina. "Whether it is a middle school or a shoe shop, we want the design to be intelligent, sustainable and innovative."

Gary C. Wyatt awarded Irondale Middle School project

Gary C. Wyatt General Contractor LLC of Birmingham, Ala., recently announced the award of the 137,000-sq.-ft. Jefferson County Board of Education Irondale Middle School.

Founded in 1976, Gary C. Wyatt General Contractor specializes in construction of churches, schools, theaters, condominiums and other commercial entities.

Golden & Associates to build Mountain Brook Elementary addition

Golden & Associates Construction LLC of Birmingham was recently awarded a $2.7 million contract to build Mountain Brook Elementary School's three-story classroom addition.

The 15,000-sq.-ft. project will include the addition of six classrooms, one of which will be used for the school's after-school enrichment program. Ceiling and lighting renovations will also be made to the school's auditorium, as well as upgrades to the school's existing electrical switch board.

The project is scheduled to be complete in early 2007. Golden & Associates' Marcial Mendez will manage the project. The architect for the project is Rick Sprague with Henry Sprott Long & Associates.

Other work the contractor has completed for the Mountain Brook Board of Education includes Brookwood Forest Elementary School's media center and multi-purpose room.

Jim Cooper Construction gets several projects

Jim Cooper Construction Co. Inc. of Birmingham has been awarded a 78,580-sq.-ft., $3.9 million FedEx Ground Home Delivery warehouse in Florence, S.C. The project manager is Paul Vardaman; assistant project manager is Edward Whatley.

The company has also been awarded a 12,000-sq.-ft. Barloworld Building in Montgomery, Ala. The project manager is Paul Vardaman; assistant project manager is John Friedberg.

Jim Cooper Construction has just completed construction on Ashley Furniture in Jefferson County, Ala. The project manager was Jay Drennen; assistant project manager was Edward Whatley, and built for Allen Woody Marks, and costs $5.4 million.
