Robins & Morton begins UAB Medical West expansion

Birmingham-based healthcare construction firm Robins & Morton Group of Birmingham, Ala., has begun an expansion to the UAB Medical West campus to meet the growing healthcare needs of the Bessemer area.

Ground was broken in October on the $21 million expansion that will add 100,000 sq. ft. to the facility. The new construction will result in an outpatient surgery center on the first floor and four floors for physician office space. The hospital, formerly known as Bessemer Carraway Medical Center, is operated under a management agreement with UAB Health Services.

Designed by Birmingham's Sims Architectural Studio, Inc., the project is an innovative cooperative venture between the hospital and its physician staff.

Bibb Grave Hall renovations began at University of Alabama

Golden & Associates Construction LLC of Birmingham, Ala., was recently awarded the contract for the University of Alabama's Bibb Graves Hall renovation project.

The $6.3 million project began in February and will be completed by November. The 65,000-sq.-ft. renovation will begin with abatement and demolition of interior walls, ceilings, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. New fire protection, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems will then be added.

After the systems are in place, new floors, drywall and ceilings will be installed. Seating in the auditorium will be replaced to finish the interior portion of the project. For the exterior of the building, Golden & Associates will remove and replace the building's windows and main entrance storefront, as well as perform masonry restoration and cleaning.

Golden & Associates Construction also recently began renovating the Cathedral of St. Paul Catholic Life Center located in downtown Birmingham. The $4.3 million dollar project will include renovating the former school building into a family life center, adding a new bell tower, and transforming the concrete parking area into a courtyard, playground, and columbarium area. The project is slated to be complete in July 2006.

In addition, Golden & Associates Construction in the final stages of construction on the new offices for Constangy Brooks & Smith LLC law firm. The 9,000-sq.-ft. leased space on the ninth floor of the One Federal Place building began as an open space and is being transformed into thirteen attorney offices, two conference rooms and offices for administrative staff.
