South Central Construction’s Best of 2008

Two awards programs recognize best projects in five states

South Central Construction’s “Best of 2008” Construction and Design Awards recipients were recently chosen from 100 nominated projects from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Awards program voting was held Sept. 16 in Baton Rouge and Sept. 9 in Memphis. Judges in Baton Rouge selected 34 projects as Louisiana’s Best of 2008, and Memphis judges selected 45 as the best in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Official recognition of the winners will be occur during a Dec. 4 awards luncheon at Boudreaux’s in Baton Rouge and a Dec. 11 luncheon at the Holiday Inn Select Ballroom in Memphis.

Baton Rouge awards voting was conducted at Embassy Suites in Baton Rouge by the following construction and design judges: Barry Lacy and Richey Charoenpap, both of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development; Charles Currier of BASF; Ann Ellis of Milton Womack Contractor; Wesley Gifford of Woodrow Wilson Construction Co.; Robert McKinney and Gordon Brooks, both of the University of Louisiana – Lafayette; and Tom Sofranko of Louisiana State University.

Memphis voting was conducted at Coletta’s Italian Restaurant in Memphis by the following judges: Larry Cockrum of Cockrum Consulting; Roger Sigler of Inman Construction; Ben Shelton of Standard Construction Co. Inc.; Tim Michael of Archimania; George Sanders of SMS Contractors Inc.; Martin E. Lipinski of the University of Memphis; Anita Haines of Pyramid Electric Inc.; Mark Zellner of Zellner Construction Co. Inc.; and Rusty Linkous of Linkous Construction.

The judges based their decisions on the following criteria:

  • Solutions to challenges
  • Project management
  • Construction innovation
  • Client service
  • Safety

Winning projects were determined as follows:

• Best of 2008 Judges’ Award in Construction or Design - Projects determined by the judges, following a discussion, to be the best of all entries

• Best project in a category - The project with the highest score in categories with three or more nomations

• Award of Excellence - Projects averaging 4.0 and above (out of 5)

• Award of Merit - All projects averaging 3.5 to 4.0 (out of 5).
