Evidence of the economic upheaval surfaced in this year’s Top 110 Contractors ranking, with the South Central region’s largest contractors reporting $1.5 billion less in regional revenue than the previous year.
The Top 110 reported $14.2 billion in revenue, compared to $15.7 billion the previous year, according to data compiled by South Central Construction magazine.
In the magazine’s Top 110 Contractors list, general contractors with a permanent office in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi or Tennessee are ranked by their 2009 regional revenue. Breakout rankings arrange contractors by state and type of construction.
The region’s largest contractor – The Shaw Group Inc. of Baton Rouge, La. – is also ranked as the region’s largest transportation contractor and the largest design-build contractor.
James Construction Group of Baton Rouge is the second largest transportation contractor, followed by Boh Bros. Construction Co. LLC of New Orleans; Gilchrist Construction Co. LLC of Alexandria, La.; and Traylor Bros. Inc. of New Orleans.
In the building market, The Yates Cos. Inc. of Philadelphia, Miss., tops the list, followed by Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Birmingham, Ala.; Turner Universal of Nashville; Messer Construction Co. of Louisville, Ky.; and Nabholz Construction Services of Conway, Ark.
The public works market is lead by Kiewit Corp. of Little Rock, Ark.; Cajun Industries LLC of Baton Rouge; Traylor Bros. Inc.; Max Foote Construction Co. of Mandeville, La.; and M. R. Pittman Group LLC of Harahan, La.
