Best of 2005: Award of Excellence Renovation/Restoration - December 2005

Desha County Courthouse Restoration, Arkansas City, Ark.

(12/01/2005)

Morris Construction Services of Little Rock recently restored the Desha County Courthouse, which was originally built in 1903 and had sustained years of neglect. The objective was to restore the entire building to its original grandeur on an extremely limited budget.

The goal was to give back to the citizens of Desha County a building that represented the dignity of the past.

As the general contractor, Morris Construction Services assembled a group of craftsmen and experienced subcontractors to pay attention to detail in restoring the building to match the owner's vision.

The first task was to remove a two-story brick addition that was not part of the original building. The addition had to be cut away while ensuring that the remainder of the structure was not damaged.

After the structure was removed, the original widow openings had to be restored and wood windows built to match the other windows in the building.

When the interior renovations began, Morris Construction Services encountered many rotten and termite-damaged support beams that had to be removed. Also, temporary shoring was installed to support the load while new beams were constructed.

The highly delicate task was accomplished without causing any structural damage to the building.
