Best of 2005: Award of Excellence Health Care - December 2005

St. Vincent's One Nineteen Health & Wellness Center, Hoover, Ala.

(12/01/2005)

The St. Vincent's One Nineteen Health & Wellness is a two-story health center with a three-story POB constructed for St. Vincent's Hospital in Hoover, Ala. The project is an aesthetically pleasing addition to the north Shelby County Highway 280 landscape.

The building is accentuated by the oval shape of the fitness center clad with a glass curtain wall which has become a trademark of the main St. Vincent's campus. The facility is surrounded by an award-winning landscaping design that included a tree conservation plan and a 2-acre retention pond that became home to a flock of geese during and after construction.

This was the first major off-site project for St. Vincent's Hospital, which is located 10 miles south of Birmingham, Ala. The concept of encompassing physical fitness, wellness, physical therapy, diagnostic treatments, physician care and an exclusive spa atmosphere into one facility has been well-received by the residents of the surrounding communities.

The entrance of the facility has a free flowing fountain that invites members into an open reception area that has the backdrop of the spiral monumental staircase in the fitness area. A custom St. Vincent's logo is nestled in the flooring. The fitness center is anchored by two clerestories that allow the natural light effect to become a part of the natural workout atmosphere.
